The following training courses are regularly held at the RMYC throughout the year.
Course dates are shown on the Training Calendar. We regularly add additional courses, so do keep checking the calendar to make sure you are aware of the training currently available.
Ideal for those who currently hold a VHF Radio Licence but – at the name suggests – would like to refresh their radio procedure.
Get in TouchThis course is often referred to as the ‘Powerboat Driving Licence’. You will be taught boat handling and seamanship together with other topics such as basic navigation, launch and recovery and emergency procedures. It is also the minimum requirement for anyone helming the club RIBS.
It is equally suitable for novices or the more experienced who need a nationally recognised qualification. No previous experience is required to take this course and you don’t need the Level 1 qualification first.
Minimum age requirement is 12 years. The course lasts two days – running from 09.00 to 17.00 each day – with a pupil/instructor ratio of 3:1.
You will be required to provide your own weatherproof clothing suitable for the conditions and a serviceable lifejacket. You will also need to provide a passport-sized photograph before the end of the course, so that your certificate can be issued.

This one-day course is run in conjunction with our on-site engineers – Southern Marine Services – and is a mix of theory and practical. It teaches you how your engine works, how to keep it healthy by using basic checks and maintenance procedures, and how to get it started again the event of a breakdown.

Get in TouchThis one-day course covers all aspects of maritime first aid including CPR including drowning protocol, the recovery position in a confined space, cold shock and hypothermia from immersion and/or exposure, seasickness and dehydration, medical assistance or advice via VHF and helicopter rescue. It is equally valuable in daily life.

Get in TouchThis is a specific course to teach the requirements for safety boat crews covering both sail training and racing aspects. It covers topics such as race management, rescuing persons from the water, offering assistance to capsized dinghies, windsurfers and other craft and rescue from a lee shore. It is normally only offered to members who wish to actively assist the Club as safety boat coxswain for yacht racing and/or sail training week.
You must hold an RYA Powerboat Level 2 certificate before taking this course and have a knowledge of sailing or sail race management.

Get in TouchThis course normally is made up of two half-day sessions. It’s an introduction to boat handling and safety in powerboats – making it ideal for youngsters (minimum age 8 years). Topics include launch and recovery (8-11 year olds observe), preparation of boat and crew, boat handling, picking up and securing to a mooring buoy, leaving and coming alongside and being towed.
The pupil/instructor ratio is 3:1 and the course normally takes place in one of the club’s RIBS, or other similar planning craft. Numbers are limited by the availability of instructors and boats, so early booking is recommended.

Get in TouchAny club member wanting to use the electric winch to launch or haul out their boat must complete this two hour training session. The electric winch is for manual self-launching of yard-stored trailer boats under 2 tonnes all-up weight.

How to book: Approximately two months before the course, a booking form will be put onto the club noticeboard. Either add your name to the sheet or email the office and ask them to add you to the list: enquiries@rmyc.co.uk. There is no charge for this course.
Note: All courses will be invoiced by the office in the same way as other events. We reserve the right to charge the full fee in the event of a late cancellation or ‘no show’.
